Technical Services Guide for Staff: Damage You Can Fix

Damage You Can Fix

Pencil Markings

WARNING: Only do this on non-brittle paper!

Use a Staedtler Mars Plastic eraser to "rub in short, meandering strokes to avoid setting up a pattern of erasing marks, and check periodically with a close sideways examination across the surface to make sure the paper is not being abraded. Never rub over media [text or pictures], whether printed or drawn, and do not persist if no improvement is made." [meandering = squiggly] Be sure not to let eraser crumbs fall into the gutter.

Tape Residue

WARNING: Only do this on non-brittle paper!

"Gently rub sticky tape adhesives with numerous extremely short strokes of the creped rubber pickup eraser. This can be time-consuming, but numerous gentle strokes eventually pick up the adhesive without damaging the paper, as fewer, more forceful applications might. The adhesive is picked off the eraser with the fingers."

Bookmarks, Paper Clips, Rubber Bands, Sticky Notes, etc.

Gently remove any sticky notes, bookmarks, paper clips, or other materials that are not part of the item. Bookmarks and sticky notes can cause damage over time if they are acidic, staining paper and making it brittle and easily broken.

Paper clips can rust and stain paper over time and cause paper to tear.
