September 27, 1972 - Kanaloa Building becomes the library/media center. It opens the first day of school with a small collection of reference books shelved on boards supported by bricks. By the end of the first year, metal shelving is in place and the collection grows by several hundred books and audiovisual materials.
The Institutional Archives documents the stories of the College by identifying, arranging, and preserving non-current institutional records of enduring value originated by offices and activities of Windward Community College, and on a selective basis, those originated by its administration, faculty, staff, and students along with other papers and selected artifacts pertaining to the College, and provide for their use for administrative and historical purposes.
Definition of College Records
College records are documents, publications, photographs, audio-visual media, ephemera, and other materials of historic value created by or for Windward Community College faculty, staff, and students in the course of official business and management of the college.
The Institutional Archives are arranged into five major record groups:
Administrative Records
Administrative records document the operation of Windward Community College. These records include the files of departments, staff, and administrators including the Office of the Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Administrative Services, Career and Community Education, and others; academic departments; committees; and many official publications produced by the College.
Biographical Records
Biographical records contain information about alumni, faculty, and staff of the College. These files often contain newspaper clippings, photographs and other biographical material.
Academic Life
Academic life contains records that provide insight into teaching and curriculum at the college. Among these files include official course catalogs, syllabi, and faculty papers about their course development and research interests.
Student Life
Student life files provide a glimpse into the world of WCC undergraduates. This collection contains records produced from student extracurricular activities and events. Collection highlights include student publications such as Ka ʻOhana Newspaper, Rain Bird; and Student Government Association records.
Buildings and Grounds
Buildings and grounds files contain photographs, drawings, and other materials recording the history and growth of the campus, including the construction, demolition, and activities that took place in these buildings. Records of note include the construction of Laʻakea Learning Commons.
