Tenure and Promotion

The 2015-17 Agreement between UHPA and the UH BOR requires all eligible faculty in the C salary classification to apply for tenure by their final year of probationary service (as defined in Article XII, Section C). Failure to apply for tenure during the final year of probationary service results in the automatic issuance of a terminal year contract commencing July 1 (Article XII, Section F of the 2015-2017 Agreement).

The normal probationary period for faculty in the C salary classification is five (5) probationary years. If requests for extensions are approved, the probationary period may extend an additional two years for a total maximum of seven (7) years

Tenure application forms shall be made available to eligible faculty members no less than six (6) weeks prior to the application deadline. Faculty members applying in the final year of the normal probationary period shall have the option of being considered under the criteria contained in the guidelines distributed this academic year or those contained in the guidelines distributed two years earlier (Article XII, Section G of the 2015-2017 Agreement).

Important! When applying for contract renewal and promotion in the same year, you must submit two (2) complete applications. One needs to be an original, and the other may be a copy.

Lecturer Step Placement

Step Placement Update serves to apply for increases in lecturer step placement (A, B, C) and document that a lecturer meets the criteria for an increase in step.  Lecturers are responsible for determining when it is appropriate to apply for a step update.

Note that in-process credits (e.g. those you are teaching right now) will be counted for application filed by step advancement deadlines.  
Credits taught in spring will be applied to fall advancement (March 15th deadline for submission).
Credits taught in summer or fall will be applied to spring advancement (October 15th deadline for submission).
