About This Guide

This guide has been created for Windward Community College students who are new to Hawai'i. As a malihini (newcomer) you most likely have experienced some sort of culture shock. This is especially true if you come from the continent. Coming from a different country, one expects to learn a new culture, but coming from the lower 48 you probably didn't anticipate that things would be that much different than any other state in the union. America does not teach Hawaiian history pre-statehood. You most likely learned about Pearl Harbor and WWII and that is all. You very likely were surprised to learn that Hawai'i had a long and vibrant history as a Sovereign Kingdom before it was annexed by the United States without the consent of the people of Hawai'i. This guide seeks to provide you with resources that can deepen your understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of Hawai'i.

This guide has links to selected books, articles, and cultural learning experiences..
