What’s the
Process?
-
Pick up the Library Self-Guided Tour (yellow booklet) at the rack near the front door. Complete the tour and return the booklet to the rack. (Night course stude`nts may complete module “A” instead of the tour.)
- Have (or get) a UH username. To get a UH Username, or if you forgot your username or password, go to https://www.hawaii.edu/account and click on either “Get a UH Username” or “Forgot your password.” Follow the directions on the screen to create an account or to recover a lost username or password. Call 956-8883 if you have questions or problems with your UH username account.
- Register for the Library Research Unit (LRU) on WebCT — Use any computer (on or off campus) that has an Internet connection and a web browser (such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari or Firefox) to go to http://webct.hawaii.edu/public/windwardLRU and click on the "Create Account" button.
After you've registered, go to this page to log in with your UH username and password.
- Work through the study materials— Click on "Modules for the Library Research Unit" and select
the first one. Read through the section and do the practice exercises.
Return to the Modules page and work through the next one. When you're
ready, return to the Modules page and select "Practice Test
for Section 1".
- Do the Practice Test and click on “submit” then “View Results.” You’ll immediately get your score and can see which questions you’ve missed. You must get a score of at least 10 points (10 out of the 15 questions correct) on the practice test before you can take the actual Exam that counts for credit.
You can do the Practice Test as often as you’d like, with a 5 minute wait between attempts.
- Take the Exam— When you're ready to take the Exam, select "Exam
for Section 1", which will be visible only after you have taken the Practice Test. Complete the Exam. Be sure to click
on "submit" and the "View Results" button to immediately get your score and
review the items you've missed. You may take the exam as often as
you need, with a 5 minute wait between attempts. If you fail the exam two times, you won't
be able to make a third attempt until you've spoken with a librarian.
The librarian will try to assist you and then release the exam to
you again. Only your highest score will be reported to your instructor.
You'll need at least 10 out of 15 points to pass.
- Do Sections 2 and 3 — which are also
available from the Modules page in WebCT. Each has a Practice Test
and an Exam, just like Section 1.
Additional Notes:
- If you have any questions, please call the reference librarian at 235-7338 during library hours
- Your
instructor will set the deadlines for you to complete the Library Research Unit.
- Exam scores will be collected
at 3:30 PM every Friday and sent to your instructor.
- The
exams will no longer be available to take after 3:30 PM on the Thursday of Finals Week.
- Your scores will be kept on file for
3 years.
- If you have already done
the Library Research Unit in another class, YOU are responsible for talking to
the librarian about transferring your scores. Please note: because the
material and the search tools may have changed, you may be required to redo certain sections of the Unit,
depending on when you completed the Library Research Unit.
- You
are encouraged to take the Information Literacy component of the CIL Exam soon
after you've completed the Library Research Unit. See http://www.hawaii.edu/wccil
