HIST 152 - Crises, Reform, and Revolution: 1st Step – What Do You Need?

Information resources on selected traditional societies that faced social and economic crises in the second half of the 19th century.

On Getting the Right Information for the Task

You're busy. And you have to get ready for your History 152 Debate assignment. Before you research anything, take a few minutes to figure out what it is you'll need to know.

  • Read your assignment carefully.
  • Ask clarifying questions.
  • Make a list of what you need to know.

Some Information on the Assignment

Students will be doing an in-class "debate" about traditional societies that were facing social and economic crises in second half of the 19th century, mainly the histories of:
  • Qing Dynasty in China
  • The British colonization of India
  • Tokugawa/Meiji Japan
  • The Ottoman Empire and the Tanzimat
  • Tsarist Russia

The students will work in groups to represent a specific society. Each group will explain the crises its assigned society faced, how it responded, and discuss whether or not the crisis and responses amounted to a "revolution." In the second debate, each group will defend its society's crises and reforms as more significant than those of the other societies.
